Segullah (Peculiar Treasure)

‘For you are a holy people to the LORD your God. The LORD your God chose you to be to him a peculiar treasure above all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.’ Deuteronomy 7:6.

The Hebrew for peculiar treasure is just one word, segullah. It is used of the valued property that belongs to an earthly king (1 Chr. 29:3; Eccles. 2:8). It is used elsewhere in the Bible of Israel’s condition before God (see Exod. 19:5; Deut. 14:2; 26:18). "Peculiar Treasure" was used as an ANE idiom of a Covenant relationship between the Suzerain and Vassals.
